At the end of September, I had to travel to Washington, DC for a work-related meeting. Since the meeting fell on a Friday, I jumped at the opportunity and stayed for a few more days to do some sight-seeing. The only other time I’d been to DC was a quick in/out for work and there was no time to play tourist.
I stayed with family Friday night and Saturday night so I had roughly 2 days to wander around. I got a whirlwind tour and took lots of pictures. I took almost 600 pictures but that’s just my usual method of taking multiple pictures of the same scene. I walked away with amost 200 usable photos.Friday afternoon we drove out to Great Falls. It’s a beautiful place that should definitely be seen if you have time and you’re in the area. Then Friday evening we went to see “The Awakening” and the FDR Memorial. Afterwards we wandered around Foggy Bottom looking for a place to eat (finding a Thai restaraunt which was very good) and then concluded the evening with walking around the Mall at night to see the monuments in their lighted state.Saturday, we headed back to the Mall to see the monuments in the day time. It was a drizzly morning — not very good for photography — but the monuments were still neat to see. After eating lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe, My Aunt dropped me off at the Museum of Natural History for the afternoon. When I got out I discovered the sun had decided to make an appearance so I headed down towards the Capitol Building to get some pictures. It turned out to be a very nice afternoon and I enjoyed sitting outside and watching the ducks and gulls play in the reflecting pool in front of the Capitol. I concluded my sightseeing on Saturday with taking a tour of the Smithsonian Castle grounds before catching the Metro back to home base for the weekend. On Sunday, we walked to Arlington Cemetery and spent the morning there. Before we left, we watched the changing of the guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and then headed to find lunch before my flight left that afternoon.
It was a great weekend…and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing all the places that I’d only read about before. I’d definitely like to go back so I can see some other things on my list.
